Founder story

Ntawigane Mushagalusa, a Refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo living in Dzaleka Refugee Camp , never thought he’d combine his passion for fashion design with his background in electricity. However, in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, he discovered a unique way to merge his skills. Before fleeing the war and insecurity in South Kivu, Eastern DRC, Ntawigane was an electrician. He earned his diploma in Industrial Electricity from Institut Technique Avenir Bukavu in 2016, graduating with a 72% score. In June 2017, he arrived in Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi.

Initially, he struggled to find work as an electrician. In 2018, he enrolled in an English language training center, recognizing the importance of language skills. The following year, he decided to pursue sewing training at “We Can Make It Again” with teacher Rostin. During the six-month program, he remained focused and supplemented his training by practicing at Bindu’s tailoring shop.

Despite initial doubts from others, Ntawigane’s determination paid off. After completing his training, he volunteered to teach the next class and opened his own tailoring shop in 2020. By 2021-2023, he had become a renowned fashion designer in the camp, bringing his dreams to life by offering free training in tailoring and fashion design.

In 2024, Ntawigane envisioned transforming his shop into an organization that would provide opportunities for youth and single mothers to learn tailoring and fashion design. He founded Black NTAW Fashion (Black Nation Together for Attracting the World with Fashion) changed to NTAW charity (Nations Together for Advancing Welfare ) which has become a beacon of hope in the camp. Ntawigane’s story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that even in challenging circumstances, one’s mind remains free to pursue their passions and create opportunities.
